William Mickey
April 2, 1943 – September 30, 2026 (Age 83)
William Lloyd Mickey, Jr., 83, lifelong resident of Ridgeley, died September 30, 2026, at UPMC-Western Maryland. Many folks knew him as “Bill” or “Sonny.”
Born April 2, 1943 in Cumberland, he was the son of the late William Lloyd Mickey, III and Hattie Louise (Parsons) Mickey.
He was a graduate of Ridgeley High School. Immediately following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force – serving from 1961-1965.
Bill began working for the Western Maryland Railroad. He then became a millwright, giving 37 years of service under the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local #1024.
He was an original member of the Ridgeley Volunteer Rescue Squad. He served with the Ridgeley Volunteer Fire Company for 13 years.
Bill had been a member of Davis Lodge #51, A.F. & A.M. and Ali Ghan Shrine.
Sonny was sober for 41 years. He regularly attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, where he used his experiences to lead others to sobriety.
Survivors include the love of his life, his beloved wife of 60 years, Mary Jane (Murphy) Mickey; children, William Lloyd Mickey, V, Julia Louise Mickey, Daniell Shertzer and husband Jim; grandchildren, Dr. Benjamin Shertzer and wife Amber Gero, William Shertzer, Jack Wilson, McKenna Wilson, Sophie Lucas, Jackson Lucas, and Chase Lucas.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., Cumberland, on Monday from 6 PM to 8 PM.
The funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Tuesday at 11 AM, with Pastor Richard Jewell, officiating.
Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens. Military honors will be accorded by Post #13 Veterans Honor Guard.
