Alfred R. Jones

December 9, 1928 - January 10, 2026 (Age 97)

In Hopewell Virginia in Prince George County , Our grandparents: William Ernest Jones and Carrie Allen united in matrimony. From that union came: Murel, Robert, Alfred, Agnes, Charles, John, Ernistine, Ronald & Larry Dr. Alfred R. Jones descended from a long line of pastors. In 1850 our great grandfather Poppie Pinster was also a pastor. He was born December 9, 1929. He graduated from high school as valedictorian at age 15. He went to the Army and became a chaplain. He was stationed in Fort Polk, Louisiana. Where he met our mother, Doris Mae Ewell, the love of his life. They met attending an Adventist church in Alexandria, LA. They were baptized into the Adventist faith. They were married December 21st. Their union lasted 55 years until she passed May 13, 2007. They went to Oakwood College (now University) and stayed in the trailers for married couples. He graduated in 1955. (Glenda was born that year in Nashville TN at Riverside Hospital.) He went to Andrews University Theological Seminary in Berrien Springs, MI where he obtained his Masters of Divinity.

He subsequently obtained his Doctorate of Divinity from Howard University. He enjoyed sports, watching and participating. Particularly horseshoes, basketball, football and golf. He subsequently married Juanita Alexander in 2011.

He passed January 10, 2026.

Professional Advocacy

-While at Andrews he was picked up by the Allegheny Conference (now Allegheny East and Allegheny West Conferences) for his first Pastoral assignment.

-He went to Berea Temple SDA Church in Baltimore, MD as Assistant Pastor in 1957.

-He went to Beacon Light SDA Church in Annapolis, MD as Pastor in 1958.

-He had two other small churches in MD at that time.

(Renard was born in Baltimore at John Hopkins Hospital that year. No hospitals in

Annapolis served people of color at that time.)

-He went to Trenton New Jersey to pastor Mt. Sinai SDA Church 1963

(Pamela was born at Helene Fuld hospital during this time)

-He went to Cleveland Ohio to pastor Bethel SDA Church 1965

-He went to Cincinnati Ohio to pastor Shiloh SDA Church 1966

-He went to Philadelphia PA to pastor Ebenezer SDA Church 1968

-He founded Germantown and Southwest SDA churches

-He went to Washington DC to First SDA church 1971

-He founded Friendship, 4th Street and Capitol Hill

-He went to the Allegheny East Conference Office 1976

where he served in:

-Community Services, Personal Ministries, Mens Ministries and Family Life

-He Pastored Pottstown SDA Church while in the conference office 1979.

He and my mother Dr. Doris Mae Ewell Jones revolutionized Family Life Ministries

by taking destination trips for seminars. They went to: Bermuda, Hawaii, Jamaica, St. Thomas, St. Kitts, Puerto Rico, Barbados, St MartinThey would have seminars for married couples for a number of days and seminars for singles for the same number of days. The seminars were strategically scheduled to maximize the experience of the location.

His Family

Dr. Alfred R. Jones loved everyone. However, next to God he cherished his family.

Wife of 55 years Dr. Doris Mae Ewell Jones, PhD, Professor of Nursing. Wife of 15 years Juanita Alexander Jones. Children: Eldest Daughter Glenda Carolyn Gilyard,(Charles Gilyard, Son Alfred Renard Jones (Crystal Thompkins-Jones), Daughter Pamela Colleen Spellman.

Grandchildren: Chalae L.Walker, Colleen Mikens, Vince Spellman, Archie Jones, Antionette Jones, Angelique Cheatham, Emanuel Spellman, Shanda Gilyard, Zakia Gilyard, Great Grandchildren: Trenis, Tyquine, Amira, Zaikee, ManMan, Nazihah, Adelyn,
